Socio-Environmental Responsibility
HanesBrands is the only textile company in Brazil who has been certified for three consecutive years by the WRAP (Worldwide Responsibility Apparel Production), a U.S. organization. This organization certifies only companies that work by rigorously focusing production with social responsibility. This certification process takes place through an audit made by a company accredited by WRAP in Brazil and who spends a few days to check all documentation, considers evidences other than documental ones and randomly and individually interviews several employees in order to confirm or not the good practices fundamentally related with the twelve following principles:
• Compliance with laws and regulations;
• Forced labor;
• Child labor;
• Sexual and moral harassment;
• Compensation and benefits;
• Work times;
• Discrimination;
• Health and Safety on the job;
• Freedom of association and collective bargaining;
• Work environment;
• Compliance with customs commercial laws (imports and exports);
• Safety.
As a socially responsible company, HBI develops a series of projects and actions having
an impact on the social life of the city where it is established.

HanesBrands strongly acts with Environmental Responsibility in order foster environmental respect,
reduce the amount of trash for sanitary landfills and lessen the environmental
impact and pollution of the ground, water and air. Among these, we mention:
Selective Waste Collection:
All recyclable trash produced by HanesBrands, such as plastic and cardboard, is collected by a
selective waste collection company (Transambiental) and taken to recycling companies.

HanesBrands also specifically collects common and cellular phone batteries.
Effluent Treatment Station:
HanesBrands has operated ETE – Effluent Treatment Station – since the early 1990’s. The station
collects the plant’s domestic and industrial sewer and provides its aerobic treatment, in which
bacteria work to leave the water in acceptable conditions to be returned to nature.

This ETE keeps the BPO level at 98%, CETESB self-monitoring.
Oil and Barrel Discarding:
HanesBrands separates and collects all highly polluting and flammable oil used by means of
a specialized company (Lwart), which recycles and resells the product. The barrels with the
chemical products are collected by Tambortec.
Fluorescent Lamps:
Since these lamps release mercury, polluting both the air and soil, HanesBrands has hired a
specialized company (Apliquim), to remove this material. This move is not a HanesBrands
obligation: it is a voluntary HanesBrands initiative for the environment.
Textile Residues and Fabric Scraps:
HanesBrands keeps a contract with a specialized company (Carlito Tex) that collects this
material every week to give it its correct destination.
Seed Project:
HanesBrands donated 2370 seedlings to the City Hall, all of them of hardwood trees under
thread of extinction, such as ipes, cabbage-palms, perobas and jacarandas in order to help
preserve the environment; it has also put in place an environmental compensation program
in is internal environment by planting native tree seedlings and involving all employees
in a program by which trees will be adopted by them.
• Our Environmental Management Global system makes sure that the intelligent use of environmental principles be integrated to our corporate everyday life, such as the elimination of wastes and resource conservation, thus minimizing the global environmental impact and always enriching such values.
These are the pillars that sustain the actions that HBI returns to the community.
